Recent upgrades to the Centreville Municipal Water System include two new Water Treatment Plants. The first was completed at Well #6 (500 Wexford Drive) and came into service in March, 2007. In July, 2007, contractors working on behalf of the Town began construction of a second Water Treatment Plant at Well #5 (on Comet Drive). This second plant began full service in 2008. Each plant uses a filtration system to remove contaminants such as arsenic (chemical symbol "As"). Water tested at these Water Treatment Plants is compliant with current Drinking Water Standards.
The remaining Well (#4, at Queen Anne's County High School), has been taken out of service and all water entering the system undergoes filtration at one of the two treatment plants. A Drinking Water Notice regarding Arsenic was posted on July 3, 2008. Four Queen Anne's County Public Schools served by Town water tested below the new Arsenic standard of 10 ug/L (micrograms per liter) in June 2007. All four samples, taken at Centreville Elementary, Kennard Elementary, Centreville Middle, and Queen Anne's County High School on June 22, 2007 were less than 5 ug/L. Click for the actual test results. However, testing results at the tap may vary given conditions in the distribution system, per the US EPA's "Arsenic and Your Distribution System".
The Town of Centreville also has a hydrant flushing program, which is intended to enhance water quality by flushing any accumulated sediments from water distribution system pipes, ensure chlorination throughout the system, and test pressure for emergency flow. This flushing is done off hours to minimize any inconvenience for our water customers. Customers may experience cloudy water during and immediately following such flushing, as sediments may be disturbed. If you observe cloudiness, please run taps until the water clears.
