The Town of Centreville is currently working on adding information to this page.  We have completed or have in progress several street improvement projects, which are listed below:

SNOW REMOVAL:  Below is the priority listing of how the Town of Centreville staff responds to snow events:

Purpose:

The purpose of this procedure is to provide clear guidance to Town personnel, and clear expectations to the community, about the process and priorities governing the Town’s snow removal process.

Department of Public Works role:

The Department of Public Works (DPW) shall salt, plow, and otherwise maintain public roadways in the following prioritized order:

1) Clear major arterial and connector streets so emergency vehicles can pass (e.g. police, fire, ambulance, etc.)

2) Minimize accumulations on other streets so at least one lane is passable (again, so emergency vehicles can reach every location)

3) Once 1 and 2 have been achieved, perform maintenance work to improve conditions generally.  This may involve snow hauling, expanding the drive aisles (e.g. eventually from curb to curb), additional salting, clearing fire hydrants to provide emergency access, clearing storm drains to move snowmelt and therefore avoid water ponding and freezing, clearing the municipal parking lot and metered parking so the community can shop for necessities, sustain the commercial core, go to court, pay bills, etc.

4) Once these standing priorities have been addressed, further maintenance should be balanced with DPW’s other core functions.

ROAD RESTORATION PROJECTS:  Below are several roads projects now completed.

1) Restoration of Little Kidwell Avenue from Rt. 213 to Kennard Elementary School/Brown Street, and repaving of Spring and Holton Streets.  This project was completed in 2007.

2) Restoration of Chesterfield Avenue, Draper Lane, and parts of Homewood (west of Glendale) and Water Street (west of Rt.213):  This construction was completed in 2009.  The detailed notification on this project is listed below.

Public Meeting Regarding Roadway Reconstruction and Utility Work

Beginning in Fall, 2007, and continuing intermittently in three phases through Summer, 2008, the Town of Centreville intends to reconstruct roadways on Chesterfield Avenue, Draper Lane, one block of Water Street (west of Liberty Street), and one block of Homewood Avenue (west of Glendale) as part of the Town’s infrastructure maintenance program.  There will be some inconvenience during the course of this project, but when it is completed the streets will be in excellent condition, with improved pedestrian access and drainage, and with spot repair or replacement of certain water or sewer lines as needed.

  • Phase One [proposed for Fall, 2007]: a) street reconstruction between Broadway and Liberty on Chesterfield and one block Water Street; b) replacement of sewer lines on Draper, Homewood (west of Glendale), and a short segment of Chesterfield extending in two directions from Draper; c) water line replacement at intersection of Broadway and Chesterfield; and d) installation of sidewalk on the north side of Chesterfield Avenue from the current sidewalk terminus (near Draper Lane) extending west to Front Street;.
  • Phase Two [proposed for Spring, 2008]: road reconstruction on the rest of Chesterfield Avenue (from Broadway extending west to the Town limits at the Corsica River bridge).
  • Phase Three [proposed for Summer, 2008 due to the school calendar]: road reconstruction of Draper and one block of Homewood (west of Glendale).

Construction management will be conducted by the Town’s Engineer, URS Corporation of Wilmington, Delaware, with one or more contractors performing the various projects.

A public informational meeting regarding this project will be held on Thursday, August 23rd at 7 p.m. at the Goodwill Fire House Meeting Room; 212 Broadway, Centreville.  Representatives from the Town of Centreville and the Town’s Engineer will present a brief overview of the project and will receive comments and answer questions concerning this project.  Copies of the current draft of the project plans are available for review at Town Hall.

If you have any questions concerning this project or the meeting on August 23rd, please email TownHall; check the Town Web site under the “Streets” Department; or contact Greg Swartz, Director of Public Works at (410) 758-1180.

Please be patient as we update this new page and visit again soon!
